Welcome
Es Seregalls is a family-run farm in the unique setting of the Serra de Tramuntana, in Es Marroigs, in Fornalutx. Respect for our olive trees and our terraces and the desire to continue the work of our ancestors have made it possible to preserve an integrated and sustainable space. Now we would like to share it with visitors who are sensitive to this way of life.
History
1994
BeginningsIn 1994, Margalida Pons and Guillem Gual, born in Fornalutx and known as Maians by their neighbours, decided to invest in a small abandoned olive grove called Es Seregalls.
The crop was in a deplorable condition. The garrigue had invaded the estate and the olive trees were covered with weeds and hidden by an endless number of vigorous pine trees. The task of recovery was very intense and after three years of hard work, the first oil production of this new stage was achieved.
1997
In Search Of ImprovementsIn 1997 the farm achieved its first production in this new stage. Since then, the appearance of trees and the harvest have been improving until today. Pruning planning, external advice and pest control have modified some traditional routines, adapting the tasks to a notorious climatic change.
Along the same lines, the work on infrastructures has been intense in the face of increasingly scarce and torrential rainfall, which makes it necessary to channel watercourses and store water in drought periods, taking advantage of the knowledge inherited in stone working.
2024
New UsesAt present, Es Seregalls maintains intact its origins as a mountain olive grove and producer of the Mallorcan variety, which is its main activity. But we have decided to start a new challenge by opening its doors to all those visitors who share this way of understanding life, respecting the trees we have inherited and that will continue their course beyond our lives. We want to facilitate a dissemination action from different perspectives that will contribute to the conservation of a unique heritage that must not disappear. For all these reasons, the Consorci Serra de Tramuntana has decided to award its distinctive mark to Es Seregalls as an informative and collaborative activity.
Surroundings
Sierra deTramuntana
The valley of Sóller is located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Cultural Landscape category in 2011.
This recognition values the almost perfect symbiosis between man and nature, which has allowed the creation of a favourable environment adapted to the terrain and the abundant rainfall through the system of terraces characteristic of our landscape.
The Estate
According to tradition in our area, each family produced its own oil. For this reason, the land was divided into small family farms which were inherited from father to son.
Our family, a lineage of famous margers (dry stone wall builders), has maintained the tradition in all aspects, including the fact that we are members of the Sant Bartomeu Cooperative in Sóller, where we produce our oil. Today, our commitment to this organisation has been recognised with the election of one of our family members as a representative of the Governing Council.
Furthermore, the estate belongs to the small group of producers of the DO Oli de Mallorca and the PDO Oliva de Mallorca. We only grow Mallorcan varieties for these guarantee labels, which are controlled by European Union regulations.
In the Sóller valley, a saragall is an area of rocks and stones created by a landslide on a mountain peak.
The peasants used these materials to build terraces and create new cultivation areas on steep slopes.
This rude and simple culture created a whole system of rainwater channelling that is very present on our estate. The contents prepared for the visit explain in detail the techniques, the tools and a whole series of concepts associated with the dry stone construction that shapes the landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana.
The value of the mountain olive grove is associated with other significant elements, such as trees of non-commercial varieties, endemic plants, migratory birds, geological formations, domestic animals that favour cultivation, etc.
In short: an adapted environment where different elements coexist in balance, which deserve special attention for a correct interpretation. The explanatory contents for these elements have been elaborated in collaboration with different specialists in each subject.
What will you see?
The visitOur proposal is an experience that you can only find in the Serra de Tramuntana, the only place in the world where our olive variety is grown. We offer you the opportunity to share moments with living beings that are more than a thousand years old.
We have carefully designed a route where every detail has its reason for being, where you will be able to perceive things that you do not have time to see on a day-to-day basis. We want your stay to become one of the best memories of your visit to the Serra de Tramuntana.
Who is the visit suitable for?
- For people of all ages who are sensitive to the environment.
- For curious people who want to know more about the environment and the origins of our landscape.
- For people who appreciate local produce.
- For those interested in the history of our margers and our culture of rainwater use.
- For lovers of olive oil tourism.
- The route is designed to be done on foot. It is not recommended for people with reduced mobility, although there are various rest points along the way.
- We remind you that the visit takes place in an agricultural area in full exploitation. Please respect the signposting and restricted access areas.
How is it structured?
Our visit is divided into three main groups of contents which are accompanied by other complementary ones: olive groves, stone construction and traditional tools. Panels integrated into the surroundings guide the visitor along the route in different languages. In the case of group visits, we offer the possibility of hiring a guide.
Each visitor can enjoy a varied tasting of local products adapted to seasonal products, depending on the season of the year. Although our oil and our well-known olives are never lacking. This tasting can be adapted for vegetarians or people with food allergies. There is a section for comments in the reservation questionnaire.
We understand our project as a means of dissemination, which is why we have developed complementary content adapted for visits by school groups.
The free visit offers a series of spaces to take a break and taste our products or simply observe the landscape.
The world of agriculture requires perseverance and appreciation, these being fundamental values during the visit. We want to return the same consideration that we ask of our guests through the constant challenge of improving this experience, which we will be continually updating on our website.
For the 22nd we propose an interesting workshop to make your own traditional "Herbes Mallorquines". Our friends at Licors Tramuntana have carefully collected the aromatic herbs and have made a wonderful aniseed in their distillery to carry out this workshop.
